A Slice of Internet, Please

In the interests of something to do, I thought it'd be interesting to see what the current top site is for each letter of the alphabet. To achieve this rather nonsensical goal I enlisted the help of the Firefox Google toolbar, which handily recommends search terms as you type. I simply entered each letter, searched for the first suggestion and clicked the first link. This is what I found:

Letter Recommended Term I'm Feeling Lucky Type of Page
A amazon www.amazon.co.uk retailer
B bebo www.bebo.com social networking

For the most part it's not surprising; 4 social networking sites, one MORPG and the usual suspects. Amazon, eBay, YouTube, Google and Wikipedia make their presence felt. There are some interesting results though.

Under K we have Kelly Blue Book, the car valuation site. This beat K-Mart, Kohls and Knocked Up to the top recommendation spot. The wonderful hit for U Tube, a pipe machinery manufacturer, returned when the abbreviated name of YouTube is used is one in the eye for 'txt spkrs' or however they like to be referred to these days. Finally, only one porn site, and it's a YouTube rip off.

It is interesting that the only celebrity in the list is Paris Hilton. There can't be a time too soon for the world to forget about that vacuous wench, but sadly that time is not now. The only television program is the Sopranos, which I understand to have recently caused some controversy.

Overall, this provides a nice overview of what the internet means today. First and foremost, social networking. Buying things comes a close second, followed by general reference and information retrieval. The practicalities of life show through with the services as mundane as the post. In last place come the current obsessions with life-wasting games, pointless celebrity and television drama. Oh, and porn.
